The Old Coach House – Romantic Devon Barn with Gardens Near Totnes & Dartmoor
Berry Pomeroy - Cottage
Accommodation
Description
A Stylish Take on Country Living
This lovingly converted barn is a sanctuary of low timber beams, exposed stonework, artisan furniture and warm, nature-inspired interiors. Each space is crafted to soothe—think sheepskin rugs, curated earth-tone décor and soft lighting that invites slow mornings and cosy evenings.
In winter, curl up by the open fire with a glass of red as the Rayburn warms the heart of the home. In summer, throw open the doors, wander through the private garden and gather seasonal fruit—apples, berries and gooseberries—straight from the trees and bushes.
A Kitchen for Slow Living & Good Food
The classic Rayburn keeps the kitchen warm and welcoming through cooler months, while a separate hob and oven ensure a modern cooking experience. With views of the garden and countryside beyond, it’s an idyllic place to prepare breakfast, cook long lunches or share relaxed family meals.
The barn also benefits from a reverse-osmosis water system, providing exceptionally pure drinking water throughout your stay.
Bedrooms Designed for Rest & Luxury
Head upstairs to discover two beautifully styled bedrooms:
- Master Bedroom
A romantic retreat featuring a custom-made cast-iron king-size bed (with its own steps!), vaulted ceiling, original beams and peaceful countryside views. Drift into a deep sleep surrounded by history and gentle rural quiet.
- Second Bedroom
A spacious and flexible room with zip-and-link beds, allowing setup as a super-king or two singles. This bedroom includes its own private en-suite shower room, ideal for families or friends travelling together.
- The spa-style family bathroom, accessible from both the landing and master bedroom, features a luxurious bathtub and separate walk-in shower.
Private Garden Sanctuary
Outside, the barn is embraced by a tranquil planted garden—perfect for alfresco dining, reading in the sunshine or wandering through fruit trees in late summer. With countryside views on all sides, it’s a peaceful haven to reconnect with nature.
The Neighbourhood: Berry Pomeroy, Totnes & South Devon
The Old Coach House lies within easy reach of Dartmoor, Totnes, Paignton, Dartmouth, and long stretches of golden South Devon coastline.
Explore:
- Berry Pomeroy Castle – an atmospheric, story-filled ruin said to be one of England’s most haunted sites.
- Totnes – packed with independent shops, cafés and restaurants including Ben’s Wine & Tapas, Gather and the ethical Bull Inn.
- South Devon Railway – steam through the countryside on an iconic route.
- Local Beaches – Paignton, Goodrington Sands and Torbay’s coastline within 15 minutes.
- Woodland walks – miles of trails, wildlife and serene scenery.
Getting Around
- A car is recommended, but not essential.
- Bus services run through nearby True Street.
- Totnes Railway Station offers direct trains to Exeter and Plymouth (approx. 30 minutes).
- Ferry trips on the River Dart provide a unique way to explore Dartmouth and riverside villages.
- The property also offers EV charging (on request, daily fee applies).
Guest Access & Experience

We like having so much space - a good-sized bedroom each and our own bathroom. We can also spread ourselves out on a comfortable settee each in the living room and still have a settee left over for sitting together. The bedrooms are also very comfortable; I particularly like the four poster bed. The standard of fixtures and fittings throughout is very good. I enjoyed spending time in the large kitchen which has a good range of pots and pans and various utensils. The heating system is efficient and gets the place nice and warm and there's always plenty of hot water. There is a good-sized, very attractive garden which we enjoyed sitting in - but you can hear traffic even though there is a good amount of hedging between the property and the road. The information booklet which is sent to you electronically details everything you need to know for your stay.

A very spacious barn conversion with two spacious bedrooms which was exactly what we were looking for space wise. . Our only comments would be that the overall feeling was that it was tired and in need of a refresh. We struggled to find two plates that were not chipped, the springs in two of the sofas seemed unsupportive so one sunk almost the floor and the many pots outside that should have provided a colourful and green welcome to the entrance were all full of dead plants. Also the noise from the hot/cold water pipe work in the second bedroom was unpleasantly noisy whenever a tap was turned on in the barn. This is meant more as helpful feedback rather than criticism. We enjoyed our stay.

Location perfect for Totnes. Barn was delightful, spacious and full of character, as well as thoughtful touches like fresh roses and a welcome hamper. Felt very homely and ideal for me and my parents.

I found the cottage in poor state. All plants in pots were dead , very overgrown shrubs around the door entrance and garden furniture I had to clean off bird poop before we could use it. Generally felt very tired. Not enough toilet rolls, no dishwasher tabs, China was chipped. I feel it would be a good idea also to describe the location by the main road and the terrible congestion when trying to leave to go towards Totness. I realise this can’t be helped but would be good to let visitors know it can be very tricky early morning and evening.

Spacious accommodation with some quirkiness to give it character. Appreciated the fact that the place was warm on arrival at 8pm on a cold February evening and that there blankets on the beds for extra warmth.

Beautiful house, super comfy modernised old cottage with great amenities. Good location, close to Totnes and easy to drive to both the coast and to Dartmoor. Lovely garden for the dogs to run round in.
