Description
PROPERTY DETAILS
Haremere Hall's stately Jacobean architecture and extensive grounds make it a quintessential English country retreat.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms: Haremere Hall boasts 11 beautifully appointed bedrooms (many with en-suite bathrooms), offering a mix of grand four-poster suites and charming smaller rooms to suit all members of your group. On the first floor, four expansive double bedrooms each feature antique four-poster beds, elegant seating areas, and their own en-suite bathrooms – two standout suites, the Prince Regent’s Room and Lady Laetitia’s Room, are so large and regal you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a period drama. Additionally, there is a twin bedroom with canopied beds and an en-suite (the Countess Room), and a snug single bedroom nearby; these share a separate family bathroom, ensuring convenience for all. In total, the Hall comfortably accommodates up to 13 guests in the main bedrooms (with quality linens and towels provided), and by special request an extra private wing with two additional double bedrooms can be opened on the 2nd floor to host up to 17 guests and a further two double bedrooms in the attic Both share 2 bathrooms one with a bath and the other one with a shower. There are 10 well-appointed bathrooms in total in the main house (most en-suite, featuring bathtubs or showers), plus a ground-floor cloakroom – plenty to cater for a full house.
Living Areas: Downstairs, Haremere Hall offers a variety of grand yet welcoming reception rooms. The highlight is the oak-paneled Great Hall (Drawing Room) with its intricate Tudor lattice ceiling and a monumental open stone fireplace – a perfect spot to relax by a roaring log fire amid history. This grand hall even features a baby grand piano, inviting impromptu musicales in a room lined with ancestral portraits and 16th- and 17th-century wood carvings. Adjoining the hall is a light-filled sitting room with plush sofas, another open fire, and French doors opening to the terrace and gardens, ideal for quiet reading or afternoon tea with a view. A cozy library is tucked next to the drawing room, stocked with vintage books and games; it even hides a television within an antique cabinet – blending modern entertainment into the old-world setting. For formal meals, the dining room is truly atmospheric, featuring a Jacobean oak fireplace overmantel and a long refectory dining table. The dining table seats 8-10 guests in stately style (with additional smaller tables available for extra seating or a children’s table), allowing everyone to dine together beneath the glimmer of candlelight and antique chandeliers.
Kitchen & Amenities: Despite the Hall’s age, the kitchen comes fully equipped to cater for large groups. It’s a compact but efficient space fitted with double ovens, an electric hob, microwave, double fridge, dishwasher, and a filter coffee machine. Whether you hire in caterers or cook your own festive feasts, you’ll find ample cookware and serveware (multiple dinner services are provided). A separate utility room houses laundry facilities (washing machine, tumble dryer) and has plenty of space for storing coats, boots, and outdoor gear. The home has modern heating to keep you comfortable (oil-fired central heating) and offers complimentary WiFi throughout, so you can stay connected. Other convenient touches include a cot and high chairs available for families with young children (by prior request), and entertainment options from board games to a DVD player for cozy nights in. Every corner of Haremere Hall is filled with character and charm, but also thoughtfully appointed to ensure a comfortable, hassle-free stay for your group.
Estate Grounds: Stepping outside, you’ll have exclusive use of the estate’s gorgeous grounds, which truly set Haremere Hall apart. Within the immediate 2-acre formal garden, manicured lawns stretch out from the house, perfect for croquet, lawn games, or strolling with a drink in hand. You’ll find a sunny terrace with outdoor furniture for al fresco dining and BBQs, overlooking the gardens – an idyllic spot to sip Pimms on a summer afternoon. Active guests will love the private tennis court for a friendly match, as well as the outdoor swimming pool tucked in a separate area of the garden. The pool is available in the warmer months for a refreshing dip (please note it is not heated, so it’s best enjoyed in late spring and summer). Because the pool is set away from the house in its own section of the garden, it offers privacy and peace – parents will also appreciate that it’s distant from the house, though it is unfenced, so supervision of children is essential. Beyond the formal gardens, the estate includes 150 acres of rolling parkland with woodlands, meadows, and even some friendly farm animals grazing – providing a true countryside experience for guests. Feel free to explore the grounds, enjoy picnics under ancient oak trees, or watch the sunset over the River Rother valley below. There is ample space for outdoor activities, from kite flying to nature walks entirely within your own private domain. The property has a long private drive and offers secure off-road parking for up to six cars right by the Hall. In the evenings, with the historic facades of Haremere Hall illuminated and not another house in sight, you’ll truly appreciate the magic of having this grand estate all to yourselves.
THE SPACE
Haremere Hall’s layout and décor are designed to give guests an authentic stately home experience combined with comfortable living. As you enter, you’re greeted by a magnificent entrance hall with a ticking grandfather clock and the main ornate staircase – an impressive carved wooden staircase that sweeps up to the first floor in grand style. This sets the tone for the house: historic craftsmanship at every turn. On the ground floor, the spacious drawing room (great hall) is the heart of the home. It features floor-to-ceiling oak paneling, a carved stone fireplace that could almost stand inside, and luxurious sofas arranged for conversation or fireside relaxation. By day, natural light streams in through tall mullioned windows; by night, the room is lit by the glow of the fire and soft lamps, creating an ambience of cozy grandeur. Adjacent, the sitting room offers a slightly more casual retreat – bright and airy with light decor, it opens directly to the terrace via French doors. This is a lovely spot to enjoy morning coffee while watching the mist rise over the lawns, or to retreat with a book while still being close to the group. The sitting room also has a fireplace and a TV discreetly placed, so it can double as a snug for movie nights without detracting from the period feel.
On the first floor, a wide landing (adorned with artwork and a picture window) leads to the main bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own personality and period style, making exploring the sleeping quarters a delight in itself. The Prince Regent’s Room, for example, is a palatial chamber with a towering four-poster bed, chaise longue, and even a private sitting area – its en-suite bathroom is equally grand, featuring a Victorian-style bath, a separate shower, and even a bidet. This room connects to an adjoining single bedroom (ideal for a child or family member who wants to stay close), forming a little suite. The Lady Laetitia’s Room rivals it in splendor, with another impressive four-poster bed and multiple windows offering sweeping views over the estate and distant countryside. It has a vintage en-suite bath as well. In contrast, the Countess Room is a charming twin bedroom – two matching single canopied beds give it a fairytale feel – and it also enjoys its own en-suite. The Duchess Room is a pretty double bedroom with antique furnishings, a dressing room and en-suite, plus a comfortable chaise for lounging. Finally, tucked quietly off the landing is a small single bedroom (accessible either through Lady Laetitia’s room or via a side door off the landing); this room, along with any additional guest rooms opened up, shares a family bathroom in the hallway. All bedrooms feature traditional décor, wardrobe or closet space, and panoramic views of the gardens or woodlands. Thanks to the thick old walls and quality bedding, a peaceful night’s sleep is assured – you’ll wake up to nothing but birdsong drifting through the windows.
Throughout the house, you’ll find thoughtful touches that enhance your stay. Perhaps play a tune on the piano in the hall, challenge someone to a board game in the library, or curl up on a window seat with one of the numerous history books about Sussex you might find on the shelves. Despite being a centuries-old mansion, heating and hot water are reliable (the estate has been modernized where it counts), so you can enjoy long baths and warm rooms even in winter. The owners have preserved Haremere Hall’s character while ensuring it remains comfortable and welcoming for modern guests – the result is a space that feels like a home away from home, albeit a very grand one!
GUEST ACCESS
Guests will have exclusive access to the main house and its grounds during their stay. This includes all the living areas on the ground floor (drawing room, sitting room, library, dining room, kitchen, etc.), as well as the six main bedrooms on the first floor and their facilities. You are welcome to roam the formal gardens, swim in the pool, play tennis on the private court, and explore the wider 150-acre estate at your leisure – it’s all yours to enjoy without disturbance. A long private drive leads to the Hall, and once on site the entire property is self-contained and exclusively for your group’s use. The estate does have a few outlying buildings (such as a lodge and mews cottages on the far edges of the grounds) which are occupied by the owners’ long-term tenants, and a caretaker resides in a separate service wing of the Hall, but none of these areas are accessible to guests and they do not use any of the Hall’s facilities when guests are in residence. Essentially, you’ll have complete privacy throughout your stay. If your group requires extra space, the aforementioned additional two bedrooms in the private wing can be made available by prior arrangement. There may be certain historically sensitive rooms or cupboards that are locked for safety or preservation, but these do not affect your use of the home. All main areas described in this listing are open for guests. We provide all essentials like bed linens, towels, kitchenware, and some basic supplies, so you can settle in and start enjoying the Hall right away. Check-in is typically contactless (with a lockbox or a greeter) and details will be provided prior to arrival. Accessible access: Please note, due to the Hall’s historic nature, there are stairs (to the first floor and to the extra wing) and no elevator, so wheelchair access may be limited (inquire if you have specific needs). There is, however, plenty of ground floor space and a ground-floor restroom for guests who may have mobility issues but can handle a few steps. Overall, as guests, you have the run of this magnificent property as if it were your own private country estate.
INTERACTION
Your stay at Haremere Hall can be as independent or supported as you wish. The property is managed by a professional team (Fresh Escapes) along with an on-site caretaker who helps look after the estate. Interaction with guests is tailored to your preferences: a member of the team or the caretaker will be available to welcome you upon arrival and can give you a brief tour or history of the Hall if you’re interested. After that, you’ll be left to enjoy the property in privacy. Should any questions or issues arise, help is just a phone call away – the caretaker lives discretely on the premises (in a separate wing) and can promptly assist with things like heating adjustments, pool maintenance, or any urgent needs, all while respecting your space. We are also happy to arrange additional services to enhance your stay: for example, catering and chef services, daily housekeeping, or even event coordination can be organized with advance notice. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, let us know – we can often help with recommendations for local vendors (such as florists or photographers) and have experience hosting weddings and large events at Haremere Hall. Generally, we strive to provide a concierge-level service: we’re available to make reservations, give local tips, or troubleshoot any aspect of your accommodation, but we will only intervene or visit the property at your request (or in an emergency). In summary, we’re here to ensure you have a wonderful stay, offering support when needed and privacy at all times. Feel free to communicate your desired level of interaction and any special requirements ahead of your visit, and we will accommodate as best as possible.
STAYING RULES
To ensure all guests have a safe and enjoyable experience at Haremere Hall, we kindly ask you to observe the following house rules during your stay:
• No Smoking: Haremere Hall is a strictly non-smoking property (indoors). Please refrain from smoking inside the house due to the historic wood interiors and furnishings. If you wish to smoke, do so outdoors away from open doors/windows and dispose of cigarette ends responsibly.
• Pet Policy: Well-behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement – up to 3 dogs are allowed per stay. Owners must ensure pets are kept off furniture and out of bedrooms, and please clean up after them in the gardens. For their safety (and to protect local wildlife), dogs should be kept under control on the estate; there is ample room to roam, but remember the grounds are open (not fully fenced). A large dog crate is available if needed. No other pets (cats, etc.) are permitted without authorization.
• Children: Children of all ages are welcome – this is a family-friendly home with baby cots and high chairs available. Parental supervision is required at all times when children are outdoors, especially near the unfenced pond and swimming pool on the grounds. The house is filled with antiques and fragile decor; while families should absolutely enjoy the space (it’s not a museum!), we do ask that you encourage kids to be gentle with historic items. We can move certain breakables out of reach upon request.
• Events & Parties: Haremere Hall is available for special events such as weddings, anniversary parties, or corporate retreats with prior approval. All events must be discussed and agreed upon at time of booking, including any additional fees or insurance that may apply. We have a list of trusted vendors and can accommodate marquee tents on the lawn, etc., but due to the Grade I listing, some restrictions (e.g. no indoor fireworks, careful use of candles) will apply for safety. Small, informal gatherings (birthday dinners, BBQs) are fine, but larger parties (over the standard capacity of the house) or amplified music outdoors require permission.
• Respect for Property: This is a historic home – please treat the house, furniture, and grounds with care. Many pieces are antique or of sentimental value. Kindly do not move heavy furniture between rooms, and avoid using any cleaning products on antique surfaces (we have specialists for that). If an accident occurs (a spill or breakage), inform us promptly – we understand these things happen and will address it without fuss, but knowing sooner helps us mitigate any damage.
• Noise: Haremere Hall is in a tranquil rural setting with no immediate neighbors near the main house. Noise is generally not a problem, but we still ask guests to maintain respectful noise levels late at night, especially if using outdoor areas, out of consideration for the estate’s tenants further afield and the peaceful countryside ambience.
• Security: Please ensure that the main doors are locked at night and when you are away from the property. Although the estate is private and very safe, the house contains valuable items, and securing the premises is a simple precaution. A security deposit may be required and will be handled through the booking channel.
• No Smoking (Indoors): (Reiterated for emphasis) Absolutely no smoking or open flames inside. The property is largely constructed of timber and old materials which are a fire risk. We do provide candle holders and fireplaces for ambiance – if using the fireplaces, please follow provided instructions and safety screens, and only burn provided or approved logs (no untreated wood or debris).
• Check-in/Check-out: Check-in is typically after 4:00 PM, and check-out by 10:00 AM, unless otherwise arranged. This allows our cleaning team sufficient time to prepare the house to our high standards for the next guests. We appreciate your cooperation with these times.
• Additional Guidelines: A detailed welcome pack at the house will outline appliance instructions, WiFi code, emergency contact numbers, and local recommendations. Please take a moment to read through it on arrival. By booking, you agree to comply with all the above house rules. If you have any questions about these rules or need exceptions (for example, bringing an additional pet or hosting a particular activity), do ask – we strive to be flexible when possible, given advance notice. Our goal is to help you enjoy Haremere Hall to the fullest while preserving it for others and the future.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
